A - 5 EASTER SUNDAY

  1. S. FAUSTI - "Do not let your heart be troubled," Jesus replies to His disciples, confused for His departure . Love requires detachment to grow and to become communion. Detachment gives identity, freedom and desire, without which there is not love. The departure of Jesus leaves a void that can easily be filled by replacements. In fact, if the "Way" is one, the deviations are numerous; if the "Truth" demands research, the lie germinates spontaneously; if " the Life" grows slowly, the death comes sudden, caused by any foolishness.
Besides the inner difficulties, there are also the external ones. The hostile environment certainly does not help to walk on the right path, to seek truth and to promote life.
Moreover it clearly opposes to anyone who disputes it. As they can see, the evangelist is worried about his community and he tells it the fundamental way to follow: the faith in Jesus and the love that comes from His Spirit. This is the inheritance that the Lord left us, by which we can make his own way. Jesus' extensive discourses of Chapters 14-16, followed by an "off-side" in c. 17, they are His Testament and correspond, even if with a different style, to the eschatological of t1he other Gospels.
From the perspective of His by now imminent Passion , they clarify what His "going" means for our everyday life. They are Words of farewell: whoever goes away, he opens the heart and confides the accomplished sense of his existence. He is the glorified Lord who speaks, in order to calm us about the future. It will be under the sign of His Love, which will unite us deeply to Him and to the Father so that we can witness Him before of the world, overcoming the scandal of the Cross.
It is a good His departure from which It comes to us the Spirit that makes us act in this world with the love with which He has loved us, until we will be in the final joy of the meeting with Him. Jesus ' leaving opens the history of man to His own Son's Way.
In these discourses the future of the world is seen as a progressive glorification of the Father in the Son of Man and in Him of every son of man.

  2. In Jesus, the firstborn, it is revealed the mystery of every brother of Him.
With His " leaving" Jesus definitely reveals Himself as Way, Truth and Life: the Way to join God , Truth and Life of man.. If the Master before was with us, now He is inside us, through faith and prayer, love and the gift of the Spirit.
This is His new presence, that fulfills the great promise: It is the new alliance between God and man, which goes beyond death itself, in communion with the Lord through His Spirit which is inside us (Ez 36,26 ). To believe means to know, to hear and to see how the leaving of Jesus was
a preceding and a preparing a place for us, because we too can always be where He is.
Effectively He is the Son, the "Way" for the return to the Father.
Thomas objects that the disciples, ignoring where He would leave , they do not know the way. Nobody is so lost as the one who does not know where to go.
Jesus replies that knowing Him is the "Way": not the Law, but the Son leads to God, because He reveals the "Truth" that He is the Father and we are His sons.
This Truth is for us "Life". To know Him is in fact to know the Father and our own reality of children.
The earthly Jesus, the flesh of the Word , the Son of Man and the Son of God, reveals our and God' truth .
In Him, the Word of God, everything is revealed to us to know the Father.
To Philip, who asks Him to show the Father, beginning and end of every journey, Jesus replies that those who saw Him ,they saw the Father.
Through His works and His words, God communicates Himself to us as the Love between Father and Son.
For this we too will do works like His ones , indeed, even bigger, precisely because He, returned to the Father,He gives us His Spirit.
Jesus does not abandon and leave us alone.
The void of His departure from us is filled with His presence in us.
The deep adhesion to Him is the confidence that makes us overcome any fear.
This faith is expressed in the prayer made in His Name. It is a dialogue with the Father, which we can pray because we are in the Son, from Whom we obtain all we need to live as brothers.
With the departure of Jesus from us it begins our return to Him.
His "teaching " gives us to go where He went, to be where He is.

  3. Alleluia JN 14:6

    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    I am the way, the truth and the life, says the Lord;
no one comes to the Father, except through me.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Gospel JN 14:1-12

    Jesus said to his disciples:
"Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God; have faith also in me.
In my Father's house there are many dwelling places.
    If there were not,
would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come back again and take you to myself,
so that where I am you also may be.
Where I am going you know the way."
    Thomas said to him,
    "Master, we do not know where you are going;
how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him."
    Philip said to him,
"Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us."
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father."

  4. R. (22) Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Exult, you just, in the LORD;
praise from the upright is fitting.
    Give thanks to the LORD on the harp;
with the ten-stringed lyre chant his praises.
    R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
Upright is the word of the LORD,
and all his works are trustworthy.
    He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
    R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness,
    To deliver them from death
and preserve them in spite of famine.
    R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Reading 2 1 PT 2:4-9

    Beloved:
Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings
but chosen and precious in the sight of God,
    and, like living stones,
let yourselves be built into a spiritual house
to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
    For it says in Scripture:
Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion,
    a cornerstone, chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame.
Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith:
The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone, and
A stone that will make people stumble,
and a rock that will make them fall.
They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny.

You are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, a people of his own,
so that you may announce the praises" of him
who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
